## Which business metrics should influence variable pay?

A useful management metric does not automatically belong in a bonus or commission formula. Some measures support forecasting, diagnosis or coaching. Others represent results that a particular role can influence and that the company wants to reward.

Before linking a metric to variable pay, define the result, data source, calculation rules and approval responsibilities. Consider how it interacts with incentives for other roles, particularly when teams share responsibility for the same customer or outcome.
